Serpentine
Serpentinite is a gemstone that belongs to the serpentine group. The name derives from the Latin serpens for snake. This is probably due to the mainly greenish and mottled coloration, which is reminiscent of the pattern of a snake. According to Pliny the Elder, the effect of this stone is to render poisons harmless. Therefore, drinking vessels were often made of this stone in the past.
