Chalcedony
Chalcedony is a variety of quartz. The name of the stone is derived from the ancient port city of Chalcedon - today it is a district of the Bosphorus metropolis of Istanbul. The beautiful stone is formed in mineral environments, mainly of volcanic origin, including in rock veins. However, it can also arise from organic material such as petrified wood or dead coral. The natural color play of the chalcedony from our range ranges from colorless to a bluish gray - different colored varieties of the gemstone have their own names such as carnelian, onyx or agate.
Chalcedony: Traditional Use and Importance
Chalcedony was already very popular in the Mediterranean region in the Bronze Age, as archaeological finds suggest. But the stone was also very popular in North America and played an important role in the tribal life of the Native Americans as a sacred stone. In order to strengthen the cohesion between the tribes, it was used in religious ceremonies, among other things. The scholar Hildegard von Bingen also mentioned chalcedony and suggested wearing it directly on the skin. Traditionally, chalcedony has been used in folk medicine for its attributed balancing and harmonizing effect since it was first recorded. Stone lore also uses the gemstone to soothe fears and doubts. It has also been handed down that it was used as a protective stone against nightmares. The beautiful chalcedony is said to help open up, live mercifully and be generous.
